More Info

Drawing Sound is an installation of graphic scores created by pianist/composer Marilyn Crispell, saxophonist/composer Raymond MacDonald, and Jo Ganter, a visual artist based in Scotland. The project was born of a research project at the University of Edinburgh in which Ganter and MacDonald experimented with creating images that would be both effective in directing musical performance and as independent pieces of visual art. The result was a series of luminous abstractions that used color and shape to direct professional musicians, who composed music by way of the images. Ganter and Crispell then worked together to create a new suite of original prints that function as graphic scores. The installation at the Kleinert/James comprises graphic scores and projected video animations with a musical soundtrack. As part of the opening reception for the show, there will be a performance with Marilyn Crispell, piano; Raymond MacDonald, saxophones; George Burt, guitar; David Rothenberg, clarinets and laptop electronics; and Doug James, drums.

Coordinated by Oscar Buitrago, Kerrie Buitrago, and Melinda Stickney-Gibson. This exhibition is generously sponsored by The University of Edinburgh and The Hope Scott Trust Fund.
